I did the following:
On the IC-705:
MENU → SET → WLAN
Turn WLAN ON.
Open Connection Type.
Select Access Point.
Configure the SSID and password if needed.
On your iPhone, iPad, or Mac, open Wi-Fi settings and join the IC-705 network.
In RadioMail, tap Add Device and wait for the radio to appear. This can take up to a minute.
What Happened?
When I tap on Add Device, the following device shows up: ICOM BT (IC-705) but after several minutes, the IC-705 never shows as a WiFi device. If I choose ICOM BT (IC-705) (which I assume is the bluetooth option) Radiomail returns “Could not pair with the IC-705.”
What Did You Expect?
I expected to see the IC-705 show as a WiFi device.
No. My IC-705 is assigned ports 50004 —> 50006 as my IC-9700 is assigned ports 50001. —> 50003.
Yes. Although nowhere did I see the this step was required.
Yes.
Is there a manual I should have seen? The instructions in the troubleshooting guide do not address any of these questions. I understand this is still in beta but having a set of instructions will save you lots of support time
RadioMail is looking for it on standard port 50001. Since you’re using Access Point, you should be able to change it without conflict. Will have to add support for non-standard config.
RadioMail should have prompted for permission to scan local network when you first tapped add device. To verify that you have granted that, you can go to iOS Settings > Apps > RadioMail
One piece of information that I found puzzling. While my iPhone WiFi allows me to connect to the IC-705, it does not display the WiFi icon at the top of the iPhone screen. But if I go to the WiFi settings, it is connected, and has been assigned an IP address by the radio. The phone also gives a warning that connection is low security since it is using a WOA/WOA2 (TKIP) protocol.
Got a little further that time. I set the ports to the defaults and turned on network access permission. Radiomail found the radio this time, but when I logged in with my remote username and password, I get this message:
“Could not sign in to the IC-705. Connection failed: Could not reach the IC-705 at IC-705.local. Check that the radio is on the same WiFi network.” (It is.)
Success! Cleared and reentered the username and password and it connected. Yay!
In packet mode, radio would transmit, but no modulation. Went to connectors and changed DATA MOD INPUT to WLAN.
One more question. When troubleshooting, the fact that Radiomail 1.60 and 2.0.0 have identical icons, makes troubleshooting harder than necessary. I have the two versions on different pages, but in the various iOS settings lists, they are one above the other and it takes detective work to know which version you’re seeing. Is there a way to change the old icon?
