I am having some trouble getting Radiomail to work with the internal Packet KISS TNC Modem. I am using a Yaesu FT-60 with a digirig Mobile Audio cable and VOX PTT cable connecting through a lightning adapter to either a iPad Pro or an iPhone 11. In either case I don't seem to be getting any tone to trigger PTT when I use Audio Output Diagnostics. I don't have a second radio to monitor any tones being generated. I have plugged in a set of headphone to the iPad headphone jack and hear nothing when I run the diagnostics. I also hear nothing if i connect my airpods to the iPhone and run the diagnostics.
Is your lightning adapter Apple original? I had the same issue using my
Iphone X. Purchased imitations on Ebay and they did not work. Luckily I
found my wife’s original headphone adapter and everything started working!

Try without anything connected. You should hear 2 tones thru the speaker of the device. If you don't perhaps volume setting is the problem? Don't use AirPods, those tones are very loud and high pitch and not meant for human consumption.
Yes. It is an original Apple adapter.

Interesting. Without anything connected I am getting a tone through the speaker. It seems that I’m only hearing a single tone though.

I had problems with an FT-60 as well. Georges and I worked on it together along with the manufacturer of the PTT cable. We never got it working and I gave up.
Georges had a theory as to why the radio might not be a good candidate for that type of operation, but I can’t recall what it was. Something about the switching time from TX to RX maybe?

After re-reading your email I noticed your using a digirig mobile. The
digirig mobile needs a usb serial port with assigned ports. Iphone does not
support this. That’s why I had to purchase the didirig vox ptt cable. This
with the radio cable I had purchased with the digirig mobile and digirig
lite and a genuine Apple earphone cable finally worked. Not even the
digirig lite worked with my iphone.

I also find that the iPad emits a constant tone for the duration of the test. The iPhone emits the tone for maybe a second and stops.

It’s not the digirig mobile. The description on the packaging says mobile cable. I have these cables…
Audio/PTT cable for Yaesu HTs using 3.5mm TRRS connector
Yaesu HT Audio/PTT Cable ( Yaesu HT Audio/PTT Cable – digirig )
digirig.net ( Yaesu HT Audio/PTT Cable – digirig )

Just be sure it is an Apple made cable. For some reason the imitations are
lacking a wire or are wired differently and don’t work. Most of the
imitations are for earphone only and the Apple supports mic input.

Few issues at play. First, yes make sure the tones are playing and that the lightening to 3.5mm audio jack is working properly.
The issue with the FT-60 is that PTT is wired into mic in. So if you look at schematic and follow the PTT line, you'll see that eventually it is being fed into the mic input. This means that the signal used to trigger the PTT, will bleed into the audio.
To alleviate the effect of this you can select a higher frequency for the tone that triggers PTT. Go to iOS Settings > Apps > RadioMail and change the Internal Packet Modem PTT Tone Frequency to some high like 12kHz. This should be filtered out by the circuit in the radio and not negatively impact the transmission.
Thanks Georges
I have the frequency for the tone set at 12kHz, And I tried other settings.
My electronics knowledge is pretty basic at the moment. So, electronic schematics might as well be Egyptian hieroglyphics.
I’m suspecting the VOX PTT cable.
I get tone from the iPhone/iPad speaker with nothing connected.
I get tone through the headphones when I connect them to the iPhone/iPad through the 3.5 to lightning adapter.
I get no tone when i connect the VOX PTT to the lightning adapter and the headphones to the VOX PTT.
I’m talking to Digirig in parallel.

Hi Georges, Happy Monday.
I’ve been working with Denis at Digirig to verify the radio audio cable and the VOX PTT cable. They are checking out fine.
When I use the RadioMail>Packet KISS TNC Modem>Packet Modem (internal)> Audio input monitor. I can adjust the volume to get a green bar.
When I try Audio output diagnostic I get a PTT light on the radio for the duration of the test.
If I try to establish a connection, through a close station, station and radio using the same frequency, I get inconsistent results.
Sometimes I get no PTT light on the radio.
Sometime i get a single PPT flash on the radio.
The most consistent result I get is the PTT light flash on the radio about every 5 seconds.
But the end result is alway ’No connection Established’
I ordered a ubiquitous UV-5R so i can hear what, if any, signal is being transmitted by the FT-60.
