not connecting

using tnc 4 with icom 7100 and standard handheld. Niether one works with the setting according to site. Checked radio mail tnc and tnc configs. Goal is to use packet over vhf. Thoughts on what else to try. Need it of network. CMS works but that not whats im going for. Want the radio freq transmission only. Ty

You're leaving out a lot of details here. Usually the issue is on the RF side of things, where your radio and the Winlink station don't hear each other because of distance or other reasons. Here's a way to troubleshoot:

1. Does RadioMail discover the TNC4?
2. Does the radio key up?
3. Is the radio on the correct frequency?
4. Using another radio on the same frequency, do you hear the radio transmit "packet data" (modem like sound)
5. Do you hear the Winlink station respond?

If everything is good up to #4, it's probably that you're out of range of the Winlink station. Move closer, get a higher antenna, increase power, etc.

If you hear the Winlink station respond but RadioMail does not seem to recognize it, it's most likely that the levels on the mobilinkd TNC4 are not set properly. Go to the mobilind setup app and adjust the audio level per their instructions.

1. Yes it discovers tnc 4
  2. Yes radio keys up via control-Also verified via spare radio same channel
  3. Yes
  4. Yes I do
  5. This question I don’t understand.

After your radio key up and transmit, do you hear a response from the station you're trying to connect to? This is best done using a second radio that can hear both side of the traffic, what you send, and what the other station will respond with.

If you don't hear any response, it's most likely because you are not able to reach the station you're trying to connect to.

No im only hearing one side and occasional feedback. I am using 2ndary to hear. I tried with HT outside in open space. Ill try again with a vertical and mobile with more power.
