I’m a new HAM and am trying to use radiomail. I setup the account as suggested, but nothing is working. I created a test email message and sent to test. I see nothing coming back after using telnet to W2LK cms.winlink.org:8772 and clicking on “connect.” Not sure what is missing. HELP!!!
Your description says you can use open Internet to send mail, as well as through an amateur radio. I’m still waiting on my DigiLink setup, so until then I thought I would test things out. So far nothing is working. Could you provide additional information regarding this.
Thanks for trying out RadioMail, and welcome to ham radio.
Since you’re using Telnet while waiting on your DigiLink setup, that’s a great way to test things. A few tips to help you get going:
• Make sure your callsign is correct in RadioMail under Settings.
• You can use Telnet mode by selecting a CMS like cms.winlink.org:8772 and tapping “Connect.” If nothing seems to happen, try tapping “Send/Receive” again after a few seconds, it takes a few seconds for emails sent to TEST to come back to you.
• Check that your message actually went to the outbox. If you saved it as a draft instead of hitting the arrow icon, it won’t send.
• Note that Winlink won’t let you send a message to your own callsign. If you’re testing, send to “TEST” — that will echo a confirmation message back to your inbox.
• Inbound emails from regular internet addresses (like Gmail) must be whitelisted. The easiest way to do this is to send a message to the address first — this automatically adds them to your whitelist so they can reply. If they email you before that, the message gets silently dropped.
Right, Winlink won’t deliver messages you send to your own callsign. It’s a common gotcha. If you want to test a connection, send a message to TEST and it’ll bounce back.
As for forms: RadioMail includes support for all Winlink standard forms, including ICS and other standard templates. To see what’s available:
Long press the compose button
Then tap Compose with Form instead of Compose Message
That’ll bring up the list of supported forms. These include ICS-213, USGS DYFI, and others used in EMCOMM and ARES work.
You can also download a copy of the standard Winlink forms and see if what you need is there.
Additionally, you can install any non-standard forms in RadioMail. You can see it in action in the video here
