SMS via RadioMail

I tried send and sms to my cellphone via RadioMail. I used the following format: sms@1xxxxxxxxxx . The text was not delivered to my phone. Should it have worked?

Most likely not.

There are a couple of ways to send sms via winlink. One method is to use the carrier sms deliver email format. Unfortunately that requires you to know which carrier the recipient uses. Secondly, most carrier are shutting down this service to eliminate spam. You can get a list of how to format the email here: Email to SMS Gateway. Send Texts Via Email - Textsendr.com

Second approach is to use someone’s dedicated service. Something like this: Winlink (SMS) – APRS

It is the Winlink SMS service that I am trying to access via RadioMail. Following their instructions I sent a test SMS to my phone. RadioMail confirmed that the message was sent, but it was not received on my iPhone.

Can you share exactly what you typed and sent?

From your message, it looks like you might have entered sms@1xxxxxxxxxx, which means you tried to send an email to the domain 1xxxxxxxxxx instead of sending a text via an email-to-SMS gateway.

I reviewed the Winlink (SMS) – APRS website again and it seems that I misunderstood the directions. I tried another sms sending it to sms@HamDesk.com with my cell phone as the subject line, as they illustrate in their example. It took about 5 minutes, but that text eventually made it to me iPhone! So, first of all “thank you” for digging in with me on this topic. I do have one more question for you, however, because RadioMail makes it so easy to send emails, why would I ever want to use Winlink Express on my laptop, which has a much more complicated and finicky setup? RadioMail just makes it so easy!
