I totally forgot that this was a thread earlier. I assumed that something like the “near me” was already in play since the filter lists “proximity”, the phone has GPS, and even if it doesn’t have Internet, it should be fairly trivial to allow update of the sort with her without an update of the station list. Indeed, with modern phones, I’d be willing to download a station list that was centered 300 miles on my 2TH just to have it available when I’m out of Internet or cellular range.
The “near me“ would be particularly useful in and around Southern California, because on a typical mobile day, I may be 50 or 100 miles separated from where I was earlier in the day, but I’m still in greater Los Angeles.
So I’ll just re-orient this thread to another vote for “near me” function, either as the default, or as an option to select …
Thanks for the reminder, and the clarification by reference to the other thread!
I'm in the same boat. I drive from Orange County, CA to south San Diego County, CA on a regular basis and my favorites list is rarely correctly sorted based on the proximity to my current location. My iPad has a GPS, so if "Proximity" is the sorting criteria, it should really make use of of the GPS in the device. Or at least, that should be an option ("Keep favorites list sorted based on GPS location"). A "Near Me" button would be great, along with a means of connecting directly to a nearby station without having to add it to the Favorites list first.
There was an issue with proximity sorting where the list would get sorted but the distanced displayed did not get refreshed, which led to all sort of confusion.
This should now be addressed in version 1.1.2. When your location moves to a different gridsquare, the station list in directory and in favorite will resort based on proximity.
I sent an update on this issue through TestFlight the other day. I don't know if you've seen it.
I think the station list needs to be sorted every time it's accessed, rather than only when you've moved to a new grid square.
I drove 40 miles away from the last location where I know the list was sorted and the stations in the list did not update... One showed it was still just 3 miles away, when in fact it was over 40 miles away in the other direction.
Sorting the list every time it's accessed would solve this problem.
Hey Julian, thanks for pointing out the screenshots I missed.
Regarding the sorting, I just wanted to clarify how it works:
The app tracks location changes when it's open. If your new location maps to a different grid square, a refresh job is kicked off.
The refresh job goes through all the stations in the database and recalculates their distance based on your new location and their published grid square.
Every time you open the directory or the favorites list, the stations are ordered by their proximity to you, from closest to farthest.
The reason why the refresh is triggered on grid square change is to avoid constantly updating the station when you're driving. Also, the gateway precision is at the grid square level, so it doesn't make sense to be more granular than that.
Also, please note that the timestamp at the bottom of the Home Screen reflects the last time a connection was established to retrieve email, not the position refresh.
