RadioMail with the QMX

Hi folks. I have a new QRP Labs QMX and would love to use RadioMail from my USB-C enabled iPhone to send and receive Winlink messages. Does anyone have any information about how I would interface it. The QMX has a built-in sound card, which may complicate things. I’d appreciate any suggestions about how to pull this off.

Thanks,

What mode are you looking to use?

I am interested in this as well. I would likely use packet. Could Packet Commander connect radiomail to the QMX?

As far as I know, QMX is HF only. Both Packet Commander and RadioMail currently have a built 1200 baud AFSK modem, which is designed for VHF/UHF, not HF.

From what I understand, QMX presents itself as a sound card that iOS might recognize. However, PTT control requires USB serial communication, which isn’t allowed under Apple’s restrictions.

For QMX to work with iOS, a few things would need to change:

  • QMX would need a VOX-style PTT approach (similar to Digirig Lite)

  • RadioMail would need to support an HF-appropriate digital mode

VARA HF and Robust Packet are proprietary, so they’re not viable options. That leaves 300 baud packet and ARDOP. Built-in ARDOP Modem is being considered in the future.

You are right! I hadn’t noticed that all the Packet stations on Radiomail were VHF/UHF.

I have used Radiomail that connected through WiFi to a computer running VaraHF and that worked. But not needing the computer(in addition to the iPhone) would be cool. I love my baofeng/AIOC/ Iphone setup for uhf/vhf winlink

I will test if Radiomail picks up the audio interface the QMX enumerates when connected to the iPhone just as a first step
